To ensure safety in popular winter zones like Rohtang and Lahaul, Himachal Pradesh has installed avalanche detection systems that monitor snow pressure, temperature shifts, and seismic activity. The devices, mounted on strategic slopes, issue automatic alerts to emergency response centers. Last year’s avalanche near Atal Tunnel emphasized the need for such monitoring. The systems, built by DRDO and Alpine Safety Technologies, are solar-powered and can operate in extreme temperatures. Tourists and drivers will receive alerts via SMS and highway signboards.
